Base excision repair is a DNA repair mechanism that corrects small, non-helix-distorting base lesions. It involves recognition and removal of the damaged base by a DNA glycosylase enzyme, followed by cleavage of the DNA backbone by an AP endonuclease and subsequent gap filling and ligation by DNA polymerase and DNA ligase, respectively.
