The biological pump is a natural process in the Earth's oceans where marine organisms, especially phytoplankton, absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis, and then transfer this carbon to the deep ocean via sinking dead organic matter, thus sequestering carbon and reducing the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
