conversos and the inquisition
"Conversos" were Jewish or Muslim individuals who converted to Christianity during the Middle Ages and Renaissance in Spain and Portugal. The Inquisition refers to the Catholic Church's institution responsible for identifying and persecuting individuals suspected of practicing their original faith secretly, including many conversos.
