excited state

An excited state refers to the higher energy level that an atom, molecule, or particle can occupy temporarily. It is a state in which the system has absorbed energy, often through the absorption of photons, and as a result, its electrons or other constituents have been raised to higher energy levels than their ground state. In this state, the system is typically more reactive and can undergo various processes like emission of light or collisional relaxation to return to its ground state.
