grand canonical ensemble
The grand canonical ensemble is a statistical mechanical ensemble used to describe a system in contact with a heat and particle reservoir, where the number of particles in the system can fluctuate. It allows for the calculation of the average properties of the system, such as energy and particle number, under conditions of varying particle exchange with the reservoir.
