The Knights Templar were a medieval Christian military order formed in the early 12th century. They devoted themselves to protecting Christian pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land during the Crusades and became known for their distinctive white mantles with a red cross. The Templars also grew financially powerful through banking and trade networks, but were later disbanded and persecuted by King Philip IV of France in the early 14th century.
