red guards
Red Guards were paramilitary units of radicalized youth in China during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). They were loyal supporters of Mao Zedong and his ideology, Maoism. The Red Guards were mobilized to enforce Mao's revolutionary agenda, engaging in violent actions such as attacking intellectuals, destroying cultural artifacts, and promoting class struggle. They played a crucial role in purging perceived "counter-revolutionaries" and promoting Maoist ideals, but their actions also led to chaos and violence in Chinese society during that period.
