red queen hypothesis
The Red Queen hypothesis refers to the idea that in order to continuously evolve and survive, organisms must constantly adapt and improve, just like the Red Queen in Lewis Carroll's "Through the Looking-Glass" who had to run as fast as she could just to stay in the same place. It suggests that organisms are in a perpetual evolutionary race with other organisms, constantly changing and evolving in response to each other's adaptations.
