regional greenhouse gas initiative (rggi)
The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) is a collaborative effort among multiple states in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide, from power plants. This initiative establishes a market-based cap-and-trade program, where participating states set a limit (cap) on the amount of emissions allowed from power plants and issue permits (allowances) equal to that cap. Power plants can buy and sell these allowances, creating financial incentives to reduce emissions and invest in cleaner energy sources.
