A saddle point is a mathematical term used to describe a point on a surface or in a function where the curvature changes in two orthogonal directions, forming a shape reminiscent of a horse saddle. At a saddle point, the surface or function has neither a local maximum nor a local minimum, but rather represents a critical point where the directions of greatest increase and decrease intersect.
