Thomas Hobbes was a philosopher who lived in the 17th century and is known for his theory of social contract. He believed that human beings are inherently self-interested and that in order to avoid the chaos of the state of nature, they must willingly surrender some of their individual freedoms to a sovereign ruler who would maintain order and protect their rights.
