war of spanish succession

The War of Spanish Succession was a conflict fought from 1701 to 1714 over who would inherit the Spanish crown after the death of the last Habsburg monarch. It was primarily fought between the supporters of the Bourbon dynasty, led by France, and the Grand Alliance of European powers, including Britain, Austria, and the Dutch Republic. The war ended with the Treaty of Utrecht, which established the Bourbon dynasty on the Spanish throne but limited its power and ensured the separation of the French and Spanish crowns.
