hemoglobin variants and sickle cell trait
Hemoglobin variants refer to the different forms of a protein called hemoglobin found in our red blood cells. Sickle cell trait is a specific type of hemoglobin variant where the protein becomes distorted in shape, causing certain red blood cells to take on a sickle-like appearance.
