Insulin resistance refers to a condition where cells in the body become less responsive to the hormone insulin, leading to high levels of insulin production to compensate. This condition hampers the ability of cells to effectively use glucose for energy, resulting in elevated blood sugar levels. On the other hand, insulin sensitivity is the opposite of insulin resistance. It implies that cells readily respond to the hormone insulin, allowing for efficient absorption and utilization of glucose from the bloodstream for energy production. Individuals with high insulin sensitivity typically have lower blood sugar levels and a reduced likelihood of developing conditions like type 2 diabetes.
