diabetic ketoacidosis (dka)
Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a severe and potentially life-threatening complication of diabetes. It occurs when blood sugar levels are very high and insulin levels are too low, causing the body to break down fat for energy instead of glucose. This process produces ketones, which accumulate in the blood, leading to acidic blood pH. DKA requires immediate medical attention as it can result in dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and organ damage if left untreated.
