keto diet and ketoacidosis
The keto diet, short for ketogenic diet, is a low-carbohydrate, high-fat eating plan designed to induce a state of ketosis in the body. Ketosis occurs when your body doesn't have enough carbohydrates to use as energy, so it starts breaking down fat stores instead. This way, ketones are produced as an alternative source of fuel. Ketoacidosis, on the other hand, is a serious medical condition characterized by extremely high levels of ketones and blood sugar. Unlike ketosis, ketoacidosis is a dangerous metabolic state usually found in individuals with type 1 diabetes or severe alcoholism. It can cause a drop in blood pH levels, leading to a life-threatening situation if left untreated. It is important to note that ketoacidosis is not related to the normal process of ketosis that occurs in individuals following the keto diet.
