schism of cyprian
The Schism of Cyprian refers to a major disagreement within the early Christian church, during the 3rd century, led by the bishop Cyprian of Carthage. The schism occurred over the issue of whether or not to accept back into the church those who had renounced their faith during times of persecution. It resulted in a split between those who believed in strict discipline and non-readmission and those who advocated for more leniency and forgiveness.
